Better Than Anything Toffee

A beloved dessert featuring a crunchy base and a rich, buttery toffee topping, perfectly balanced with chocolate and nuts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 40 saltine crackers (one full sleeve)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or preferred type)
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Flaky sea salt for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single, tight layer over the baking sheet.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until combined and smooth.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it cook undisturbed for 2-5 minutes until it thickens (aim for 265°F–280°F).
  5. Immediately pour the hot toffee over the saltines and spread it evenly with a spatula.
  6. Bake the whole thing in the preheated oven for 5-8 minutes until the toffee is bubbling.
  7. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee, and let them sit for 1-2 minutes. Then spread the melted chocolate evenly.
  8. Top with chopped nuts and/or flaky sea salt if desired.
  9. Let it cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 20-30 minutes until set.
  10. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container.

Notes

Watch the toffee closely while it cooks to avoid burning. You can use different types of chocolate or skip the nuts if preferred.
