Candy Cane Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup crushed candy canes
  • Red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until smooth.
  3. Mix in the vanilla and peppermint extracts.
  4. Gradually blend in the flour and salt until well combined.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions; color one portion with red food coloring.
  6. Take small pieces of each dough, roll them into ropes, and twist them together to form candy cane shapes.
  7. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  10. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze tightly wrapped for longer storage. Adjust peppermint extract to taste.
