Peanut Butter Chocolate Layer Cake

A decadent chocolate layer cake with creamy peanut butter frosting and crunchy Reese’s chunks.

  • 1 3/4 cups (228g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (414g) sugar
  • 3/4 cup (85g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot water
  • 2 cups (448g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups (350g) peanut butter
  • 9 cups (1035g) powdered sugar
  • 67 tbsp (90-105ml) water or milk
  • 6 Reese’s, chopped
  • Pinch of salt
  • 6 oz (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 8 Reese’s, cut in half
  • Crumble Reese’s for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and eggs.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients. Mix well.
  5. Slowly add the hot water and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let them cool completely.
  8. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and peanut butter together until creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well.
  10. Add water or milk to reach your desired frosting consistency.
  11. Place one chocolate cake layer on a plate and spread a layer of peanut butter frosting on top. Add the second layer and repeat.
  12. Coat the entire cake with the remaining peanut butter frosting.
  13. Melt the chocolate chips with heavy whipping cream until smooth. Pour over the top of the cake and let it drip down the sides.
  14. Top with chopped Reese’s and crumbled Reese’s.

Notes

Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature for the best mixing results. For a more intense chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
