  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, combine the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar; mix well.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until combined.
  9. Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one layer, add the second layer, and frost the top and sides of the entire cake. Enjoy your red velvet cake!

Notes

Make sure the ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Do not overmix the batter; mix until just combined for the best texture. Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant red color if desired.
