Homemade Soft Pretzels

Delicious homemade soft pretzels that are chewy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for snacking or dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Stir in the flour and salt using a wooden spoon until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a clean surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a saucepan, bring about 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
  8. Carefully drop each shaped pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on the baking sheet.
  9. Lightly sprinkle the top of each pretzel with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake the pretzels in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  11. Allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
