Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

A comforting dish of beef patties baked in a rich gravy, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper together.
  2. Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties. Let them rest while you prepare the gravy base.
  3. Brown the patties in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat for 3–4 minutes on each side until they are golden. Remove the patties and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onions in butter until they are soft.
  5. Add the flour and stir for about 2 minutes to cook it slightly.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring until the mixture is smooth.
  7. Nestle the browned patties into the gravy, ensuring they are covered well.
  8. Cover the skillet tightly and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
  9. After 45 minutes, uncover the skillet and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the gravy to thicken.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding Worcestershire sauce to the beef mixture. Letting the patties rest before cooking helps them hold their shape better.
